Charles Meryon produced this etching, Rue des Toiles à Bourges, during a period when he turned his attention away from the sea and toward the decaying architecture of medieval France. The work depicts a narrow street in the city of Bourges, characterised by timber-framed houses and steep gables. Meryon employs a precise, needle-like line to capture the textures of weathered wood, stone masonry, and the uneven cobblestones of the street.

The composition draws the eye toward the central building, which features a prominent gable and a small sculptural detail. Meryon fills the sky with swirling, almost turbulent clouds, a stylistic choice that adds a sense of unease to the scene. The shadows are deep and heavy, created through dense cross-hatching, which provides a stark contrast to the lighter areas of the building facades.
