Honoré-Victorin Daumier produced this lithograph in response to the civil unrest in Paris during April 1834. The image depicts the aftermath of a massacre in a tenement building on the Rue Transnonain, where government troops killed unarmed civilians following a sniper attack on their patrol. Daumier focuses on the domestic interior, showing a man in his nightshirt lying dead across his bed, having fallen onto the floor. Beneath him, the body of a child is visible, while the feet of another victim appear in the background.

The composition is stark and unadorned. Daumier uses the lithographic medium to create deep, dramatic shadows that contrast with the pale, crumpled bedclothes. The artist avoids heroic or romanticised depictions of death. Instead, he presents the scene with a cold, journalistic precision that forces the viewer to confront the brutality of the event. The man's posture is awkward and heavy, conveying the suddenness of his end.

This work was published by the Association Mensuelle, a group that distributed prints to subscribers to fund legal defences for journalists. The government attempted to suppress the image by seizing the lithographic stone and destroying as many prints as possible. Despite these efforts, the work circulated widely, becoming a recognised symbol of state violence. Daumier's ability to capture the quiet horror of a private space violated by public conflict remains a defining characteristic of his career. The print is a direct observation of political reality, stripped of artifice and sentimentality. It serves as a record of the tension between the French monarchy and the working population during the July Monarchy.
