Honoré Daumier produced this lithograph in response to the civil unrest in Paris during April 1834. The image depicts the aftermath of a massacre on the Rue Transnonain, where government troops killed innocent civilians in a tenement building following a sniper attack on soldiers. Daumier focuses on the domestic interior, showing a man lying dead in his nightshirt, having fallen across the body of a child. To the left, the feet of another victim are visible, while an older man lies to the right. The composition uses stark lighting to draw attention to the crumpled forms of the victims, stripped of any heroic or romanticised quality.

Daumier was a prolific caricaturist, and this work represents a shift toward a more sombre, journalistic approach to political commentary. By choosing to depict the private tragedy within a home rather than the public street battle, he forces the viewer to confront the human cost of state violence. The lithographic process allows for soft, tonal transitions that create a sense of heavy, oppressive silence in the room. The work was published in the journal L'Association Mensuelle, which sought to fund the legal defence of political prisoners. The French government recognised the power of this image and attempted to suppress its distribution, seizing the original lithographic stones shortly after publication. This print remains a primary example of how graphic art can function as a direct critique of contemporary political events.
