Hercules Segers remains one of the most experimental printmakers of the Dutch Golden Age. His approach to the etching medium often involved unconventional techniques, including the use of drypoint and the application of hand-applied colour to his impressions. This work depicts the ruins of Brederode Castle, a subject that allowed Segers to explore texture and atmospheric depth through his characteristic line work.
