This etching by Hieronymus Cock depicts the remnants of the Septizonium and the Colosseum in Rome. Cock, a Flemish publisher and printmaker, played a significant role in disseminating images of classical antiquity to Northern Europe during the sixteenth century. His work often captured the fascination with Roman ruins that defined the period, blending topographical accuracy with a sense of melancholic decay.

The composition presents the crumbling structures against a sparse sky. The Septizonium, a monumental nymphaeum built by Septimius Severus, appears on the left with its tiered columns and weathered masonry. To the right, the arched remains of the Colosseum provide a sense of scale and historical weight. Cock employs precise, fine lines to define the texture of the stone, the vegetation clinging to the ruins, and the distant, hazy horizon. Two small figures stand in the foreground, their presence offering a human perspective against the vastness of the ancient architecture.

As a publisher based in Antwerp, Cock commissioned and produced numerous series of prints that documented the architectural wonders of Rome.
