This etching by Hieronymus Cock, titled Ruinvarum Palatii Maioris Prospectus, captures the fascination of the Northern Renaissance with the classical antiquities of Rome. Published in 1551 as part of a series documenting Roman ruins, the work presents a view of the Palatine Hill. Cock, a publisher and printmaker based in Antwerp, played a significant role in disseminating images of Italian architecture to a wider European audience.

The composition is structured around the imposing, weathered remains of the Palatine structures in the foreground. The artist employs fine, precise lines to delineate the crumbling masonry, overgrown with vegetation, which contrasts with the distant, more schematic rendering of the Baths of Caracalla. Small figures are scattered throughout the scene, providing a sense of scale and human presence amidst the monumental decay.
