Max Weber, a central figure in the development of American modernism, produced Russian Ballet in 1916. This work reflects his time in Paris, where he engaged with the avant-garde circles of Henri Rousseau, Pablo Picasso, and Henri Matisse. The painting captures the kinetic energy of a performance through a fragmented, cubist lens. Rather than depicting the dancers in a traditional manner, Weber deconstructs the stage environment into geometric planes, sharp angles, and overlapping forms.
