This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshikazu belongs to the genre known as Yokohama-e, which emerged during the late Edo period. Following the opening of Japanese ports to foreign trade in the mid-nineteenth century, artists documented the appearance and customs of visitors from abroad. This specific work depicts a Russian couple, identified by the term Oroshiajin, standing before a ship anchored in the harbour.

The male figure wears a dark coat and cap, holding a parasol to shield himself from the sun. The female figure is dressed in a bonnet and a voluminous skirt featuring a repeating pattern of stylized animals and waves. A notable detail is the small framed image held by the woman, which mirrors the couple themselves, a recursive visual device often employed in ukiyo-e to add a layer of narrative interest. The background features a simplified rendering of a sailing vessel, reflecting the Japanese fascination with foreign maritime technology and dress during this period of transition.

Yoshikazu, a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, was particularly active in producing these prints for a public eager to understand the foreigners arriving at Yokohama. The composition is structured with a clear foreground focus on the figures, while the background remains relatively sparse. The colour palette relies on traditional woodblock pigments, with muted tones for the clothing and a distinct blue for the sea.
