Description
A nineteenth-century Yokohama-e woodblock print depicting a Russian couple, reflecting the Japanese fascination with foreign visitors during the Edo period.
This woodblock print by Kunihisa belongs to the genre known as Yokohama-e, which emerged during the mid-nineteenth century following the opening of Japanese ports to international trade. These prints functioned as visual news reports for a Japanese public curious about the appearance, customs, and attire of foreigners arriving in the country.
The composition depicts a Russian couple, rendered with the characteristic stylistic conventions of the period. The male figure wears a heavy, fur-trimmed coat with a distinct spotted pattern, while the female figure is shown in a dark jacket over a striped skirt. The artist employs a flat, graphic approach to the figures, prioritising the documentation of their clothing over anatomical realism. The inclusion of Japanese calligraphy surrounding the figures provides context, likely describing the subjects or their origins to the contemporary viewer.
Such works were produced in significant numbers to satisfy the demand for information about the outside world. The colour palette is restrained, relying on the natural tone of the paper as a background, which allows the blue, red, and black inks to define the forms clearly. The print captures a specific moment in Japanese history when the isolationist policies of the Edo period were ending, and the influx of Westerners became a subject of intense fascination. This piece serves as a historical record of cross-cultural encounter, reflecting how Japanese artists interpreted and categorised the unfamiliar visitors through the traditional medium of the woodblock print.
