This etching by the French draughtsman and printmaker Israël Silvestre depicts the exterior of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican. Silvestre, who served as the drawing master to the young Louis XIV, travelled extensively in Italy during the mid-seventeenth century. His work is noted for its precision and clarity, qualities that made his topographical views highly sought after by collectors and travellers on the Grand Tour.

The composition captures the basilica from a wide angle, allowing the viewer to observe the scale of the facade and the dome. In the foreground, the Vatican obelisk stands to the left, while a fountain occupies the centre of the piazza. Silvestre employs fine, controlled lines to render the architectural details of the church, from the columns of the facade to the structure of the dome. The sky is filled with light, horizontal hatching that suggests a calm atmosphere. Small figures populate the square, providing a sense of scale to the massive architecture. These staffage figures, typical of Silvestre's work, are rendered with minimal detail yet effectively animate the scene.

Silvestre was a prolific artist, producing hundreds of prints that documented the cities, palaces, and monuments of Europe. His approach to architectural representation prioritised accuracy and a balanced perspective.
