Mellan employs his characteristic technique of swelling lines, where the width of the stroke varies to create volume and shadow without the use of cross-hatching. This approach results in a clean, sculptural quality that defines the forms of the figures and the architectural setting.

The composition is divided into two distinct zones. In the foreground, the saint lies recumbent, his body angled across the lower portion of the frame. He holds a crucifix, and his expression is one of quiet resignation. Behind him, a staircase leads to an upper level where a figure observes the scene. To the right, an archway opens onto a distant view of a Roman street, where a procession of figures moves through the space. The light source, represented by a circular sun or halo above the stairs, casts rays that illuminate the scene with a controlled, atmospheric clarity.

Mellan spent significant time in Rome, where he absorbed the influence of Italian masters. His work is noted for its technical precision and the economy of his line. By avoiding the dense, overlapping marks common in the period, he achieves a luminosity that allows the paper to function as an active element of the image.
