Description
A refined tempera and gold leaf panel depicting Saint Clare of Assisi, created by the Sienese master Lippo Memmi in the mid-fourteenth century.
This panel painting by Lippo Memmi depicts Saint Clare of Assisi, the founder of the Order of Saint Clare. Memmi, a central figure of the Sienese School, worked closely with his brother-in-law Simone Martini. His style is defined by a refined approach to line and a delicate handling of facial features, which is evident in the gentle expression of the saint. The figure is set against a gold-leaf background, a hallmark of fourteenth-century Italian devotional art. The gold provides a flat, ethereal space that removes the subject from a specific temporal setting, focusing the viewer on the spiritual presence of the saint.
Saint Clare is shown in her traditional habit, holding a book and a vessel. The application of tempera allows for subtle gradations in the flesh tones, while the gilding is tooled with a decorative halo pattern. The panel retains its original architectural frame, which mimics the Gothic forms found in contemporary ecclesiastical structures. This work reflects the Sienese preference for elegance and decorative clarity over the more sculptural, volumetric concerns of the Florentine tradition. The preservation of the gold surface reveals the craquelure typical of tempera panels from this period, adding texture to the gilded field. This image is a representative example of the devotional panels produced for private or monastic use in the mid-fourteenth century, where the focus remains on the clarity of the iconographic message and the technical mastery of the gilding process.
