Description

A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Boëtius Adamsz. Bolswert depicting Saint Euphrasia in prayer, confronted by a demonic figure.

This engraving by Boëtius Adamsz. Bolswert depicts Saint Euphrasia of Constantinople in a moment of ascetic devotion. The composition focuses on the saint kneeling in prayer, her hands clasped around a rosary. She is positioned within a sparse, dark environment, which suggests the isolation of her life as a hermit. Behind her, a demonic figure looms, representing the spiritual trials and temptations she faced during her period of seclusion.

Bolswert employs a rigorous technique of cross-hatching and varied line weights to define the forms. The contrast between the light illuminating the saint and the deep shadows surrounding the demon creates a dramatic tension characteristic of the period. The inclusion of simple objects, such as a bowl and a bundle of twigs on the floor, reinforces the austere nature of her existence. The Latin inscription, 'Sancta Euphraxia', identifies the subject, placing the work within the tradition of hagiographic print series common in the seventeenth century.

As a Dutch engraver, Bolswert was known for his technical precision and his ability to translate complex theological narratives into accessible visual formats. This print demonstrates his skill in rendering texture, from the folds of the saint's simple garments to the grotesque features of the tempter. The work functions as a meditation on faith and the struggle against malevolent forces, rendered with the clarity and discipline typical of Northern Baroque printmaking. The composition is balanced, directing the viewer's attention to the saint's focused expression while acknowledging the external threat posed by the figure behind her. This piece is a representative example of the devotional prints produced in the Netherlands during the early seventeenth century, intended for both private contemplation and wider circulation among the faithful.
