Description

A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Boëtius Adamsz. Bolswert depicting the ascetic Saint Euphrosyne of Alexandria.

This engraving by Boëtius Adamsz. Bolswert depicts Saint Euphrosyne of Alexandria, a figure from early Christian hagiography. The composition captures the saint in her hermetic state, dressed in monastic attire, clutching a cross. She is attended by two figures, likely representing the spiritual companions who discovered her identity after her death. Bolswert, a skilled Dutch engraver, employs precise cross-hatching to define the folds of the heavy robes and the texture of the surrounding environment. The lighting is dramatic, typical of the period, drawing the eye to the central figure while casting the background into shadow.

Bolswert was active during the early seventeenth century and is recognised for his technical proficiency in reproducing the works of other masters, as well as his original compositions. His approach to line work creates a sense of volume and weight, particularly in the drapery of the saint's habit. The inclusion of a book and a discipline at the base of the figure provides narrative context, referencing the ascetic life of the saint. The work reflects the Counter-Reformation interest in hagiographic subjects, which were frequently produced as devotional prints for a wider audience. The clarity of the burin work allows for a high degree of detail, from the expressions on the faces of the figures to the subtle variations in the texture of the ground. This print is a representative example of the technical standards maintained by Dutch printmakers during the Golden Age, where the medium of engraving was used to disseminate religious narratives with both accuracy and artistic sensitivity.
