A shepherd's crook rests against her shoulder, while her flock grazes in the surrounding field. The Latin inscription at the base, 'Pascitur et pascit', translates to 'She feeds and is fed', a reference to her spiritual and pastoral duties.

Mellan is recognised for his unique approach to engraving. Rather than using traditional cross-hatching to create shadow and volume, he employed a single, continuous swelling line. By varying the thickness and spacing of this single line, he achieved a sense of form and light that remains distinct in the history of printmaking.
