Description
A detailed 1791 etching by Jean-Jacques de Boissieu depicting Saint Jerome in a contemplative, natural setting.
Jean-Jacques de Boissieu, a French artist from Lyon, produced this etching in 1791. The composition depicts Saint Jerome in his traditional role as a scholar and hermit. The saint sits upon a rock, hunched over a manuscript, writing with a quill. His posture suggests deep concentration, while his physical form is rendered with anatomical precision. Beside him, a small cluster of flowers rests on the ground, and a stack of heavy books lies near his feet.
In the background, a rustic wooden structure stands near a rocky outcrop. A lion, the traditional attribute of Saint Jerome, is visible near the entrance of this shelter. The scene is framed by a large, gnarled tree that provides a sense of enclosure and verticality to the composition. The etching technique allows for a wide range of tonal values, from the deep shadows beneath the tree to the lighter, atmospheric treatment of the distant hills.
Boissieu was known for his mastery of the etching process, often drawing inspiration from Dutch masters of the seventeenth century. His work frequently combined naturalistic observation with classical themes. This particular print demonstrates his ability to balance the human figure with the surrounding environment, creating a cohesive narrative space. The lines are fine and controlled, allowing for subtle gradations of light that define the form of the saint and the texture of the natural elements. This piece is a representative example of his technical skill and his preference for quiet, contemplative subjects.
