Description
A late fifteenth-century Flemish diptych depicting Saint Paul with a donor and the apparition of Christ to the Virgin Mary.
This diptych, attributed to the Master of the Saint Ursula Legend, represents the characteristic style of late fifteenth-century Bruges painting. The artist, named for the cycle of the life of Saint Ursula, worked within the tradition established by earlier masters such as Jan van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden. The work displays the meticulous attention to surface textures and architectural detail common to the period.
The left panel depicts Saint Paul standing behind a kneeling male donor, who is shown in a posture of prayer. The saint holds his traditional attribute, a sword, while the donor is dressed in contemporary garments of the late medieval period. The right panel shows the apparition of the resurrected Christ to his mother, the Virgin Mary. Both scenes are set within domestic or ecclesiastical interiors, featuring tiled floors and arched openings that reveal glimpses of distant landscapes or urban settings. The figures are rendered with a focus on anatomical precision and the heavy, sculptural folds of their drapery.
The colour palette is dominated by deep reds, greens, and muted earth tones, applied with the smooth, layered technique typical of oil painting on wood panels. The spatial construction relies on linear perspective, creating a sense of depth that guides the viewer through the interior spaces. The inclusion of the donor figure serves to personalise the devotional nature of the diptych, a common practice in private altarpieces commissioned by wealthy patrons of the era. This work provides a clear view into the devotional practices and aesthetic preferences of the late medieval Low Countries, where religious narrative and portraiture were frequently combined to create objects for private contemplation.
