Hiroshige depicts the forty-eighth station, Sakanoshita, known for the nearby Fude-sute-yama, or the Throwing Away the Brush Peak. The name originates from a legend involving a painter who, overwhelmed by the mountain's beauty, discarded his brush in frustration at his inability to capture its essence.

The composition balances the rugged, craggy peaks on the left with a teahouse on the right. The mountain is rendered with sharp, angular lines and deep blue washes, contrasting with the soft, atmospheric mist that obscures the base of the slope. In the foreground, travellers rest at a roadside teahouse, while a figure leads a pack animal along the path. The scene captures the daily rhythm of the Tōkaidō road, blending human activity with the imposing presence of the natural environment.

Hiroshige employs a restrained palette, using shades of indigo, ochre, and muted green to define the terrain.
