Description
A refined Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Torii Kiyonaga, depicting the legendary sisters Murasame and Matsukaze with elegant poise and detailed textile patterns.
This woodblock print by Torii Kiyonaga depicts the legendary sisters Murasame and Matsukaze, figures from Japanese literature often associated with the Suma coast. The composition belongs to the series Fashionable Brocades of the East, a collection that captures the aesthetic sensibilities of the Edo period. Kiyonaga is recognised for his tall, graceful figures, and this work displays his characteristic approach to proportion and poise.
The two women are shown carrying salt-water buckets suspended from shoulder poles, a task traditionally linked to their narrative. Their kimonos feature detailed patterns, including stylised birds and wave motifs, which demonstrate the technical precision of the woodblock carving process. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on soft ochres, muted greens, and black ink to define the forms against a light background. A pine branch arches across the upper portion of the frame, providing a subtle natural element that frames the figures without overwhelming the composition.
Kiyonaga moved away from the more compact figure styles of his predecessors, opting instead for a sense of physical stature and elegance. The lines are clean and deliberate, guiding the eye across the flowing fabric of the garments. The print reflects the cultural interest in theatrical and literary themes during the late eighteenth century, presenting these historical figures through the lens of contemporary fashion and artistic convention. The work remains a clear example of the refined output associated with the Torii school during its peak.
