Brandes, a minister and amateur artist, maintained a detailed visual diary of his travels, documenting the people, flora, and maritime vessels he encountered. His work functions as an ethnographic record, prioritising clarity and observation over stylistic flourish.
The drawing is executed with a light, economical hand. On the left, the sampan is depicted with figures engaged in rowing, while the prauw on the right shows individuals navigating with poles. The composition is sparse, focusing entirely on the structural differences between the two vessels. Below the sketches, Brandes has inscribed the names of the boats in his characteristic cursive script. The paper shows signs of age, including minor foxing and a torn edge, which provides a sense of the document's history as part of a larger collection of personal papers.
