This engraving by the anonymous artist known as Master ES depicts the biblical narrative of Samson overcoming a lion. Active in the Upper Rhine region during the mid-fifteenth century, Master ES remains one of the most significant figures in the early history of European printmaking. His work demonstrates a sophisticated command of the burin, allowing for a level of detail that defined the aesthetic of the period.

The composition features Samson in the centre, his posture dynamic as he forces the jaws of the lion apart. To the right, a female figure, often interpreted as Delilah, observes the struggle. The background is sparse, featuring a single tree and a ground plane covered in stylised floral motifs, which serves to focus the viewer on the physical exertion of the central figures.
