This woodcut by Veit Rudolf Specklin depicts the biblical narrative of the prophet Samuel anointing Saul as the first king of Israel. Samuel, dressed in priestly vestments, stands to the right, pouring oil from a vessel onto the head of the kneeling Saul. Saul, already wearing a crown, holds a sceptre, signifying his transition into royal authority.
