Description
A detailed 1787 engraving by Thomas Cook, depicting Samuel Johnson after a portrait by Sir Joshua Reynolds.
This engraving by Thomas Cook depicts the lexicographer and man of letters, Samuel Johnson. The work is based on an original oil painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds, which was held in the collection of Bennet Langton. Cook, a skilled engraver, captures the gravitas of the subject through precise line work and tonal variation. The portrait is presented within an oval frame, decorated with oak leaves, which rests upon a classical plinth.
Below the central portrait, two allegorical figures flank the pedestal. These figures, rendered in a classical style, contribute to the formal composition of the print. The inclusion of such motifs reflects the aesthetic conventions of late eighteenth-century British printmaking, where portraiture was frequently elevated through symbolic or architectural framing. The text at the base provides the publication details, noting that the print was issued by T. Longman in Paternoster Row on 23 March 1787.
Samuel Johnson is shown in a characteristic pose, his expression conveying a sense of intellectual weight. The engraving technique allows for a subtle modulation of light and shadow, particularly across the folds of his coat and the texture of his wig. This print serves as a record of the visual identity of one of the most significant figures in English literature, as interpreted by his contemporaries. The balance between the central portrait and the surrounding decorative elements creates a structured, formal appearance typical of the period. This piece is a fine example of the reproductive print culture that allowed the likenesses of public figures to circulate widely among the educated classes of the eighteenth century.
