John French Sloan, a central figure of the Ashcan School, spent his later years exploring the light and terrain of the American Southwest. Santa Fe Siesta, completed between 1948 and 1949, represents a distinct departure from his earlier urban genre scenes. The work employs a unique technical approach, utilising tempera with an overglaze to create a series of fine, rhythmic lines that define the contours of the reclining female figure. This cross-hatching technique provides a sculptural quality to the subject, suggesting volume through texture rather than traditional chiaroscuro.

The composition is divided between the interior space and the view beyond the window. The figure rests upon a yellow bed, her form echoing the undulating shapes of the arid hills visible in the distance. A small dog sits quietly in the foreground, providing a domestic anchor to the scene.
