Description
A striking Post-Impressionist work by Paul Sérusier, featuring a figure in traditional Breton dress rendered with flat planes of colour and bold, synthetic forms.
Paul Sérusier, a central figure in the Nabis group, produced this work during his time in Brittany. The painting demonstrates the artist's move away from naturalistic representation towards a more synthetic approach. The composition is defined by flat planes of colour and simplified forms, which reflect the influence of Gauguin and the Pont-Aven school.
The figure, dressed in traditional Breton attire, is positioned in the foreground against a simplified coastal backdrop. Sérusier employs a deliberate, non-naturalistic palette, using bold yellows for the sand and a striking blue for the shawl. The black umbrella creates a strong vertical element that anchors the composition. By reducing the visual information to essential shapes and outlines, the artist prioritises the decorative quality of the surface over the illusion of three-dimensional space.
This approach aligns with the Nabis philosophy, which sought to move beyond the mere observation of nature. Instead, the artist aims to express a subjective experience through the arrangement of colour and line. The work avoids the atmospheric perspective common in earlier nineteenth-century painting, opting instead for a graphic clarity that anticipates later developments in modern art. The texture of the paint remains visible, suggesting the artist's focus on the physical surface of the canvas as a site for creative synthesis.
