Description
A serene woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting a moonlit river scene at the Seba station along the Kiso Kaidō route.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts the station of Seba, located along the Kiso Kaidō route. It is part of a series produced in collaboration with Keisai Eisen, documenting the sixty-nine post stations between Edo and Kyoto. The composition features a moonlit scene over the Narai River, where a boatman navigates a vessel laden with cargo. The willow trees, bent by the wind, frame the full moon, which provides a cool, luminous light across the water and the grassy banks.
Hiroshige employs a palette dominated by deep blues and greens, typical of his atmospheric approach to printmaking. The contrast between the dark, textured cargo in the boat and the smooth, reflective surface of the river demonstrates his technical control over the woodblock medium. The inclusion of small, thatched-roof dwellings in the distance provides a sense of scale and human presence within the natural environment. The print captures a quiet, nocturnal moment, characteristic of the artist's interest in weather conditions and the changing times of day.
The Kiso Kaidō series remains a significant record of travel in nineteenth-century Japan. Hiroshige's ability to convey the mood of a specific location through simplified forms and colour gradients influenced many later artists. This print demonstrates his skill in balancing the foreground activity of the boatman with the expansive, serene background. The work is a fine example of the ukiyo-e tradition, where the focus shifts from urban life to the observation of the natural world and the experiences of travellers on the road.
