Description
A refined self-portrait by Ferdinand Bol, featuring the artist in elegant robes alongside a classical sculpture.
Ferdinand Bol, a pupil of Rembrandt, produced this self-portrait during the later stages of his career. The work reflects the shift in Dutch portraiture towards a more refined, aristocratic presentation. Bol depicts himself in a loose, flowing robe of gold-toned fabric, draped with a heavy crimson cloak. His posture is relaxed, with one arm resting upon a stone pedestal. Beside him sits a small, sculpted figure of a sleeping putto, which introduces a classical element to the composition.
The lighting is characteristic of the period, utilising a soft chiaroscuro to model the artist's features and the textures of his clothing. The background remains dark and indistinct, which directs focus to the subject. Bol's expression is composed and direct, offering a view into his self-perception as a successful painter in Amsterdam. The brushwork is controlled, showing the technical precision that defined his later output. Unlike the more experimental works of his teacher, this portrait adheres to the conventions of the time, prioritising a dignified and polished appearance.
This painting is held in the collection of the Dordrechts Museum. It provides a clear example of the transition from the dramatic light effects of the early seventeenth century to the more formalised, elegant style that became popular among the Dutch elite. The inclusion of the putto, often associated with Cupid, adds a layer of allegorical interest, though the primary intent remains the documentation of the artist's own likeness and status.
