Ivan Shishkin, a central figure of the Peredvizhniki movement, produced this study of Sestroretsk in 1889. The work captures a quiet, sun-dappled clearing within a wooded area, featuring a small, ochre-coloured structure that serves as a modest architectural anchor. Shishkin is widely recognised for his technical precision in depicting the Russian forest, and this piece demonstrates his ability to balance the weight of mature trees with the openness of the grassy foreground.

The composition relies on the framing effect of the large trunks on either side, which draw the eye toward the centre of the frame. The light filters through the canopy, creating patches of illumination on the ground that contrast with the deeper shadows beneath the foliage. Shishkin employs a naturalistic palette, favouring earthy greens, browns, and the muted yellow of the building, which harmonises with the surrounding vegetation.
