This triptych by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi depicts the Shinpūren Rebellion of 1876, a violent uprising in Kumamoto led by a group of traditionalist samurai. The rebels opposed the rapid modernisation of Japan during the Meiji period, specifically the prohibition of swords and the abolition of the topknot. Yoshitoshi, a master of the late Ukiyo-e tradition, captures the chaotic energy of the conflict through a dramatic composition that spans three panels.

The scene is dominated by a sense of urgency and movement. Figures are dressed in traditional armour, brandishing spears and swords against a backdrop of dark, turbulent skies. The colour palette is aggressive, utilising deep reds, blacks, and stark whites to convey the intensity of the battle. Yoshitoshi employs his characteristic attention to detail in the rendering of the warriors, their expressions, and the specific heraldry on their banners. The composition is dense, with figures overlapping to create a sense of claustrophobic combat.

As one of the final major practitioners of the woodblock print tradition, Yoshitoshi often turned his attention to historical and contemporary events.
