Description
A detailed Renaissance engraving by Giulio Bonasone depicting the classical encounter between King Midas and the satyr Silenus.
This engraving by Giulio Bonasone depicts the classical myth of King Midas and Silenus. The narrative centres on the moment the king encounters the intoxicated companion of Bacchus, who has been captured by peasants and brought before the monarch. Bonasone, a prolific printmaker from Bologna, demonstrates his technical proficiency through the use of varied hatching and cross-hatching to define the musculature of the satyrs and the heavy drapery of the king's robes.
The composition is balanced, with the regal figure of Midas positioned on the left, his crown clearly visible, while the satyrs and the captured Silenus occupy the right side of the frame. The background features a sparse, schematic treatment of trees and a distant structure, typical of the period's approach to mythological scenes. The artist's signature, I. BONASO. F., is inscribed at the base, confirming his authorship of this copperplate work.
Bonasone was active during the mid-sixteenth century and is known for his reproductions of works by Raphael and Michelangelo, as well as his own original compositions. His style reflects the influence of the Roman school, particularly in the anatomical precision of the figures. The print captures the tension of the mythological encounter with clarity, focusing on the physical contrast between the courtly king and the wild, goat-legged followers of the wine god. This piece offers a clear example of the printmaking techniques employed by Italian masters to disseminate classical narratives to a wider audience during the Renaissance period.
