This stipple engraving by Francesco Bartolozzi depicts Sir Thomas Elyot, a diplomat and scholar of the Tudor period. Bartolozzi, an Italian engraver who spent much of his career in London, produced this work as part of a series reproducing drawings from the Royal Collection. The original source material is a drawing by Hans Holbein the Younger, which Bartolozzi translated into the delicate stipple technique for which he became known.

Stipple engraving involves the use of small dots to create tonal variations, allowing for a soft, painterly quality that mimics the texture of chalk or crayon. In this portrait, the technique captures the subtle contours of Elyot's face and the texture of his fur-trimmed garment. The subject wears a flat cap and a simple tunic, reflecting the sober fashion of the sixteenth-century English court. The inscription at the top identifies the sitter as Th: Eliott Knight, while the lower margin provides details regarding the publication by J. Chamberlaine in 1794.

Bartolozzi was appointed Engraver to the King in 1764, and his work was highly regarded for its technical precision. By reproducing Holbein's sketches, Bartolozzi helped to disseminate the visual history of the Tudor era to a wider audience in the late eighteenth century.
