Artemisia Gentileschi, a prominent figure of the Italian Baroque, presents a classical subject through her distinct lens in this composition. The work depicts Venus, the goddess of love, in a state of repose, accompanied by a small Cupid figure who holds a fan of peacock feathers above her. The painting draws upon the established tradition of the reclining nude, a motif popularised by Venetian masters, yet Gentileschi imbues the figure with a sense of physical presence and naturalism that is characteristic of her practice.
