This engraving by Heinrich Aldegrever, dated 1553, depicts the classical myth of Phaethon petitioning his father, the sun god Sol, for permission to drive the solar chariot. As one of the 'Little Masters' of the German Renaissance, Aldegrever demonstrates a high level of technical precision in his use of the burin. The composition focuses on the interaction between the two figures: Sol sits enthroned, his form muscular and defined by careful cross-hatching, while Phaethon kneels before him in a posture of supplication.

The sun god is identified by the radiant solar disc positioned behind him, a common iconographic device in sixteenth-century prints. The architectural setting, featuring classical columns and draped textiles, provides a structured environment for the narrative. Aldegrever employs a dense system of lines to create volume and shadow, particularly in the musculature of the figures and the folds of the cushions.
