Pontius, a highly skilled printmaker within the Rubens circle, employs a sophisticated system of hatching and cross-hatching to translate the sculptural qualities of the original bust into a two-dimensional medium.

The portrait captures the subject in a three-quarter view, focusing on the weathered features and the heavy, rhythmic curls of the beard and hair. The use of light and shadow creates a sense of volume, giving the figure a tangible presence. The inscription at the base, 'SOPHOCLES SOPHILI. F. ATHENIENSIS', identifies the subject, while the Latin text notes the source of the design, 'P.P. Rubens delin.' (drawn by Peter Paul Rubens) and 'P. Pontius sculpsit' (engraved by Paulus Pontius). The date 1638 is also recorded on the plate.

Pontius was instrumental in disseminating the compositions of Rubens through his precise engraving technique.
