Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, a Lithuanian composer and painter, created this work during a period of intense creative output. His approach to visual art often mirrored his musical background, employing rhythmic structures and tonal shifts to convey emotional states. Sorrow (I) is a clear example of his Symbolist practice, where the physical world serves as a vehicle for internal experience rather than a literal representation of nature.

The composition is divided into two distinct zones. In the foreground, sharp, dark, triangular forms rise like blades or silhouettes of vegetation. These shapes create a sense of immediate, pointed tension. Beyond this, a calm, expansive body of water stretches towards a distant horizon. The horizon line is marked by a thin, glowing sliver of light, suggesting a setting sun or a faint dawn. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft greys, muted purples, and cool blues to establish a quiet, melancholic atmosphere.

Čiurlionis often explored themes of cosmic solitude and the human condition. In this piece, the contrast between the aggressive, dark foreground and the vast, ethereal distance suggests a separation between the observer and the infinite.
