Description
A refined surimono woodblock print by Ryūryūkyo Shinsai, featuring a resting duck and scallions accompanied by traditional Japanese kyōka poetry.
This print originates from the 'Spring Rain Collection' (Harusame shū), a series of surimono produced in the early nineteenth century. Surimono were privately commissioned woodblock prints, often distributed among members of poetry circles. They are characterised by their high production quality, use of expensive pigments, and integration of text with image.
Ryūryūkyo Shinsai, a student of Katsushika Hokusai, demonstrates his mastery of the medium here. The composition features a duck resting with its head tucked, accompanied by a small cluster of scallions. The subject matter is typical of the period, where everyday objects or creatures were elevated through artistic treatment and poetic association. The calligraphic text surrounding the duck consists of kyōka, or comic verse, which was a popular literary pursuit among the urban literati of Edo-period Japan.
The print exhibits a refined use of colour, with subtle gradients on the duck's plumage and muted tones for the scallions. The paper texture remains visible, adding to the tactile quality of the original work. Shinsai employs a clean, minimalist approach, allowing the negative space of the paper to define the scene. This print provides a glimpse into the sophisticated culture of private print commissions, where the interplay between visual art and written word was central to the aesthetic experience.
