Description
A portrait of Saint Bernardino of Siena by El Greco, featuring his signature elongated style and expressive, spiritual atmosphere.
This work depicts Saint Bernardino of Siena, the Italian Franciscan missionary and preacher, rendered in the distinctive style of El Greco. The artist, born Domenikos Theotokopoulos, moved from Crete to Italy before settling in Toledo, Spain, where he developed his signature elongated figures and expressive, otherworldly lighting. In this composition, the saint is shown in his traditional Franciscan habit, holding a staff topped with the IHS monogram, a symbol he famously promoted during his sermons.
El Greco employs a muted, earthy palette, focusing on the textures of the coarse woollen habit and the ethereal, swirling clouds that form the background. The figure possesses a characteristic verticality, with the saint's features rendered with a sense of ascetic intensity. At his feet, three mitres are placed on the ground, representing the three bishoprics he declined during his life, a detail that reinforces his commitment to humility and the Franciscan vow of poverty. The arched top of the canvas suggests its original purpose as part of a larger altarpiece or a devotional niche, common in the ecclesiastical commissions of the period.
The brushwork is fluid and rapid, typical of the artist's later years in Toledo. Rather than aiming for anatomical precision, El Greco prioritises the spiritual presence of the subject. The light does not originate from a single source but seems to emanate from the figure himself, creating an atmosphere of quiet contemplation. This print captures the sombre, meditative quality of the original oil painting, offering a clear view of the artist's technique and his approach to religious iconography.
