Domenico Ghirlandaio, a master of the Florentine Renaissance, depicts the young Saint John the Baptist within a constructed wilderness. The figure of the saint occupies the foreground, rendered with the anatomical precision and clarity of form that defined the artist's approach to human subjects. He wears the traditional camel-hair tunic, partially covered by a flowing red mantle that adds a sense of movement to the composition.
