Description
An early Post-Byzantine icon by El Greco, depicting Saint Luke painting the Virgin and Child in the traditional Cretan style.
This work, attributed to the early period of Domenikos Theotokopoulos, known as El Greco, dates to his time in Crete before his migration to Italy and Spain. It represents a traditional subject within the Post-Byzantine iconographic canon: Saint Luke the Evangelist depicted in the act of painting the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child. The composition follows the conventions of Cretan icon painting, which maintained a strong connection to the stylistic traditions of the Eastern Orthodox Church.
The panel displays the characteristic use of gold leaf for the background, a technique intended to suggest a divine, non-material space. Saint Luke is shown seated before an easel, his figure rendered with the linear precision typical of the period. The Virgin and Child appear on the panel within the painting, reflecting the legend that Saint Luke was the first iconographer to capture their likenesses from life. The colour palette is dominated by deep reds, ochres, and the metallic lustre of gold, which has aged over the centuries to reveal the underlying wood support in certain areas.
While the later works of El Greco are recognised for their elongated figures and dramatic, swirling compositions, this early piece demonstrates his grounding in the rigorous discipline of icon painting. The focus remains on the symbolic representation of the sacred figures rather than naturalistic perspective. The work provides a clear view into the formative years of an artist who would eventually become a central figure of the Spanish Renaissance. The physical condition of the panel shows the wear of time, with areas of paint loss that expose the gesso and wood beneath, yet the iconographic clarity remains intact. This print captures the texture and historical weight of the original wooden panel, offering a view into the early development of one of art history's most distinct painters.
