Bernardo Strozzi, a Genoese painter and Capuchin friar, produced this work during his active period in Italy. The composition depicts the Christian martyr St. Maurice, traditionally identified as the leader of the Theban Legion, interacting with a celestial messenger. Strozzi employs a dramatic use of light and shadow, a hallmark of the Baroque period, to draw the viewer into the intimate exchange between the armoured saint and the youthful angel.

The figure of St. Maurice is rendered with attention to the reflective surfaces of his metal breastplate, which contrasts with the soft, ethereal quality of the angel. The angel, positioned to the right, holds a helmet, suggesting a moment of preparation or divine intervention before the saint's martyrdom.
