Bernardo Strozzi, a Genoese painter who later moved to Venice, produced this depiction of Saint Roch during his mature period. The composition focuses on the saint, traditionally identified by his pilgrim attire, including the scallop shell pinned to his tunic and the staff he carries. Strozzi employs a tenebrist approach, using deep shadows to isolate the figure against a dark background, which directs attention to the saint's upward gaze and expressive hand gesture.

The inclusion of the dog, a traditional attribute of Saint Roch, adds a narrative element to the portrait. The animal is shown at the bottom left, looking towards the viewer while the saint remains absorbed in his spiritual contemplation. Strozzi's brushwork is fluid and confident, a characteristic trait of his Venetian-influenced style.
