Painted in 1620, this work by Guercino depicts the moment William of Aquitaine renounces his military life to embrace a monastic vocation. The composition is divided into two distinct zones, a common device in Italian Baroque art. The lower register focuses on the earthly transition: William, clad in armour, kneels before the bishop to receive the monastic cowl. His expression conveys a sense of solemnity and transformation. The figures are arranged to guide the eye toward this central act of devotion.

The upper register introduces a celestial presence. The Virgin Mary, holding the infant Christ, appears amidst clouds, accompanied by an angel. This heavenly intervention provides a spiritual context for the earthly event below. Guercino employs a dramatic use of light and shadow, known as chiaroscuro, to model the figures and create a sense of volume. The heavy folds of the drapery and the metallic sheen of the armour demonstrate the artist's technical skill in rendering textures.

Guercino, born Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, was a master of the Bolognese school. His work is characterised by a naturalistic approach to religious subjects, often imbuing them with a sense of human emotion. The painting was commissioned for the church of San Gregorio in Bologna. It remains a clear example of the Counter-Reformation style, which sought to make religious narratives accessible and emotionally engaging for the viewer. The interplay between the divine and the human realms is managed through the diagonal lines of the composition, which connect the kneeling saint to the figures above. The palette is dominated by deep, earthy tones, punctuated by the lighter, ethereal colours of the celestial group.
