A refined Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Nishikawa Sukenobu, depicting a woman in a kimono with elegant calligraphy.
Nishikawa Sukenobu was a prolific artist based in Kyoto, known for his contributions to the Ukiyo-e genre. Unlike his contemporaries in Edo who focused heavily on the pleasure districts, Sukenobu often depicted women in more domestic or literary settings. This print shows a woman standing in a relaxed posture, holding a circular fan. Her kimono features subtle patterns, and the composition is balanced by the inclusion of calligraphic text, which integrates the written word into the visual design of the print. The lines are fluid and controlled, characteristic of the artist's style during the mid-Edo period. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft tones that allow the focus to remain on the figure's posture and the elegant drape of her garments. The paper has aged to a warm, neutral tone, providing a quiet background for the ink work. The inclusion of calligraphy suggests a connection to the literary culture of the time, where art and poetry often occupied the same space. Sukenobu's work influenced many later artists, including those who developed the full-colour nishiki-e prints. His ability to capture the grace of his subjects through simple, rhythmic lines remains a defining feature of his output. This print is a representative example of his approach to figure drawing, where the subject is presented with a sense of calm and poise. The print is a fine example of the aesthetic values prevalent in Kyoto during the eighteenth century, prioritising balance and subtle detail over the more dramatic flair seen in other regional schools of Japanese printmaking.
