A minimalist study of stones by Dutch artist Dick Bruna, featuring bold black outlines and a bright yellow background.
This work by Dutch artist and illustrator Dick Bruna demonstrates his signature approach to visual communication. Bruna, known for his disciplined reduction of form, employs a limited palette and bold, black outlines to define his subjects. In this composition, he presents a collection of stones, each rendered as a simplified, rounded shape. The arrangement avoids unnecessary detail, focusing instead on the relationship between colour and negative space.
The background is a flat, saturated yellow, which provides a stark contrast to the muted tones of the stones. Bruna uses a palette of grey, blue, and brown, punctuated by a single white, crescent-like form. This choice of colour reflects his preference for primary and secondary hues, applied with a clarity that makes the image immediately legible. The thick, uniform black lines act as a boundary for each shape, preventing the colours from bleeding into one another and maintaining a sense of order.
Bruna often worked with a rigorous process of elimination. He would sketch a subject repeatedly, removing elements until only the most essential lines remained. This piece reflects that methodology. It is not a realistic depiction of stones, but rather a graphic interpretation of their form. The composition is balanced and static, inviting the viewer to appreciate the interplay of geometry and colour. The presence of the number 15 in the corner suggests this may have been part of a larger series or a page from a book project. By stripping away the superfluous, Bruna achieves a directness that is characteristic of his wider body of work, including his famous character designs and book covers.
