Description
An anthropomorphic woodblock print from the Edo period depicting rats in traditional kimono, set within a domestic garden scene.
This woodblock print originates from the mid-nineteenth century, a period when Japanese artists frequently employed anthropomorphism to comment on social hierarchies and domestic life. Akatsuki no Kanenari, a writer and artist based in Osaka, produced this work as part of a larger narrative series. The scene depicts a group of rats dressed in traditional kimono, gathered within a domestic interior that mimics the architecture of a wealthy household. The figures are arranged in a formal posture, suggesting a social gathering or a family meeting.
The composition utilises the conventions of ukiyo-e, with clear outlines and flat areas of colour. The background features cherry blossoms, which frame the scene and provide a sense of seasonal context. The inclusion of text within the image indicates its origin as a page from an illustrated book, or ehon. These publications were popular among the urban population of the Edo period, often blending humour with moral instruction or satire.
The artist demonstrates a keen eye for detail in the rendering of the textiles worn by the rat figures, reflecting the fashion of the time. The architectural elements, such as the veranda and the stone lantern visible in the garden, are rendered with a degree of precision that grounds the fantastical subject matter in a recognisable reality. The palette is restrained, relying on soft pinks, muted greens, and earthy tones, which creates a harmonious visual experience. This print offers a glimpse into the creative output of the Kamigata region, which maintained a distinct artistic identity separate from the more widely documented schools of Edo. It remains a curious example of the intersection between literature and visual art in nineteenth-century Japan.
