Description
A narrative panel by Andrea del Sarto depicting scenes from the life of Joseph, created for a Florentine nuptial chamber in the early sixteenth century.
This work is part of a series of panels commissioned for the nuptial chamber of Pierfrancesco Borgherini and Margherita Acciaiuoli in Florence. Andrea del Sarto, a master of the Florentine High Renaissance, depicts multiple episodes from the biblical narrative of Joseph within a single pictorial space. The composition employs a continuous narrative technique, common in the period, where figures appear in different stages of the story across the panel.
The scene is structured around architectural elements that guide the eye through the various events. On the left, Joseph is shown being sold by his brothers, while other segments of the panel illustrate his later life in Egypt. The figures are rendered with the soft, sfumato-influenced modelling characteristic of the artist, yet they retain a clarity of form that defines his approach to the human figure. The palette is dominated by warm ochres, deep reds, and a striking blue sky, which provides a sense of atmospheric depth.
Del Sarto balances the complex arrangement of figures with a clear sense of order. The architecture, featuring a prominent staircase and archway, creates a stage-like environment for the unfolding drama. The inclusion of contemporary Florentine dress for the figures brings the ancient narrative into the context of the sixteenth century, a common practice among artists of the time. This panel demonstrates the artist's ability to manage large-scale narrative compositions while maintaining attention to individual characterisation and gesture. The work remains a fine example of the decorative painting traditions that flourished in private Florentine residences during the early sixteenth century.
