Théo van Rysselberghe, a central figure in the Belgian Neo-Impressionist movement, produced this work during a period when he was deeply engaged with the scientific application of colour theory. The painting demonstrates the divisionist technique, where small, distinct dots of pigment are applied to the canvas to create a luminous effect when viewed from a distance. By placing complementary colours side by side, the artist achieves a heightened sense of light and atmospheric clarity.

The composition depicts the coastal terrain near Ambleteuse, a commune in northern France. The foreground features a sloping hillside rendered in cool blues and greens, punctuated by the rhythmic placement of vertical fence posts. This cool-toned mass contrasts with the sky, which is dominated by a brilliant, high-chroma yellow. The light reflects across the water, creating a path of illumination that draws the eye toward the horizon. The artist avoids blending colours on the palette, preferring to let the viewer's eye perform the optical mixing. This method results in a surface that appears to shimmer, capturing the fleeting quality of a coastal sunset.

Van Rysselberghe was a founding member of Les XX, a group that brought together avant-garde artists in Brussels. His work reflects the influence of Georges Seurat and Paul Signac, yet he maintained a distinct approach to the application of paint.
