Description
A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Dirck Volckertsz. Coornhert depicting the biblical trial of Susanna.
This engraving depicts the biblical narrative of Susanna, who faces false accusations from two elders. Dirck Volckertsz. Coornhert, a Dutch engraver and humanist, employs a complex compositional structure to convey the tension of the courtroom scene. The figures are arranged across multiple levels, with the judges seated in an elevated position, while Susanna stands to the right, her posture suggesting vulnerability and defiance.
The artist uses precise, rhythmic hatching to define the musculature of the figures and the folds of their garments. This technique, characteristic of the period, creates a sense of volume and depth within the print. The foreground features a seated figure on the steps, whose gesture directs the viewer's eye toward the central conflict. The architectural elements, including the brickwork and the draped fabric, provide a structured environment for the drama to unfold.
Coornhert was known for his intellectual approach to printmaking, often selecting subjects that allowed for the exploration of moral and legal themes. The clarity of the line work and the careful attention to anatomical detail reflect the influence of Italian Mannerism on Northern European printmakers of the sixteenth century. This work demonstrates the technical proficiency required to translate complex narrative scenes into the medium of engraving, balancing the demands of perspective with the expressive requirements of the story. The print serves as a record of the period's interest in classical and biblical themes, rendered with the technical rigour typical of the Dutch school.
