Description
A masterful Baroque engraving by Paulus Pontius after Peter Paul Rubens, depicting the dramatic biblical narrative of Susanna and the Elders.
This engraving by Paulus Pontius, after a composition by Peter Paul Rubens, depicts the biblical narrative of Susanna and the Elders. The scene captures the moment of confrontation, where Susanna, bathing in a garden, is approached by two men. Pontius, a master of the burin, translates the painterly qualities of Rubens into a monochrome medium through precise hatching and cross-hatching techniques. The contrast between the light-filled figure of Susanna and the shadowed, heavy forms of the elders creates a dramatic tension characteristic of the Flemish Baroque period.
The composition is structured around the central figure of Susanna, whose posture conveys distress and vulnerability. To her left, a fountain featuring a putto pouring water adds a classical element to the setting, while the architectural background suggests a formal garden. The Latin inscription at the base, 'Turpe Senilis Amor' (Shameful is the love of the old), provides a moralising commentary on the scene, reflecting the period's interest in combining classical themes with didactic messages.
Pontius was one of the most skilled engravers working within the circle of Rubens, and this work demonstrates his ability to render textures, from the softness of skin to the coarse fabrics of the elders' garments. The print is a fine example of the collaborative nature of seventeenth-century printmaking, where the invention of the painter was disseminated through the technical expertise of the engraver. The work remains a study in light and shadow, showcasing the technical rigour required to achieve depth and volume on a two-dimensional surface. Collectors of Baroque prints will appreciate the clarity of the line work and the fidelity to the Rubensian aesthetic, which prioritises dynamic movement and emotional weight.
