Description
A detailed 1555 engraving by Heinrich Aldegrever depicting the biblical story of Susanna, showcasing the technical precision of the German Little Masters.
This engraving by Heinrich Aldegrever, dated 1555, depicts the biblical narrative of Susanna bathing in her garden, unaware of the two elders observing her from the background. Aldegrever, a member of the group known as the Little Masters, demonstrates his technical proficiency through the use of fine, controlled lines to define form, texture, and light. The composition is structured with a clear foreground, middle ground, and background, typical of the period's interest in spatial depth.
In the foreground, Susanna is seated beside a stone fountain, her figure rendered with anatomical precision. The drapery of her discarded garments is captured with careful attention to folds and volume. To the right, the two elders are positioned near a gnarled tree, their presence providing the narrative tension central to the story. The background features a detailed architectural setting, including a tower and various buildings, which reflects the influence of contemporary German urban design. A sundial is visible on the wall to the left, adding a symbolic element often found in Renaissance prints to denote the passage of time or the transience of life.
Aldegrever's work is characterised by a balance between the human figure and the surrounding environment. The engraving technique allows for a high degree of detail, from the texture of the stone fountain to the individual leaves on the tree. This print is an example of the small-scale, highly detailed works produced by the Little Masters, which were intended for close inspection and collection by connoisseurs. The artist's monogram and the date are clearly visible on a stone tablet in the lower right corner, confirming the work's provenance within his final year of activity.
